Previous Condition: This painting had been previous conserved. The first indication of this treatment is that the painting had been lined where the original tacking margins on the canvas had been removed. This treatment was indicative of a commercial lining technique used in England in the early 1900’s. The painting had accumulated surface dirt and the varnish had discoloured with time. The overall appearance was quite yellowed so that the artist’s colours could no longer be appreciated as intended.

Treatment: Photographic documentation of the original state of the work was done and solvents and reagent tests were carried out. Once the appropriate reagents and solvents with a good safety margin were selected, cleaning proceeded using a swab stick. Following cleaning and photographic documentation, the back was cleaned and the keys secured. An isolating brush varnish was then applied. Small damages were retouched and a final conservation varnish was applied. Finally, the frame was cleaned and the painting secured using brass plates.
